How to use the Discount Calculator

Calculate a sale price, two consecutive discounts or the original price before a sale. See the amount saved and the effective discount.

Formula

Sale price = original price × (1 − discount/100). Two discounts = original × (1 − d1/100) × (1 − d2/100).

Worked example

A $120 item with 25% off is $90. A 20% discount followed by 10% off is a 28% discount overall.

Important things to know

The original price cannot be recovered from a final price after a full 100% reduction.

Frequently asked questions

How do two discounts combine?

Successive discounts multiply rather than add. A 20% discount followed by 10% leaves 80% × 90% = 72% of the price, so the total saving is 28%, not 30%. Use the “two discounts” mode.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A sale price of 80 after a 20% discount means the original price was 80 ÷ 0.8 = 100. Use the “find original price” mode.

Does the calculator include tax?

No. Discounts are calculated on the price you enter. To add or remove sales tax or VAT, use the VAT / Sales Tax calculator on the result.
