How to use the Percentage Calculator

Find a percentage of a number, calculate what percentage one number is of another, add or subtract percentages, work out changes and reverse percentages.

Formula

Percentage of a number = value × percentage ÷ 100. Percentage change = (new − original) ÷ |original| × 100.

Worked example

33% of 121 is 39.93. Add 4% to 5 to get 5.2.

Important things to know

Percentage change has no defined value if the starting amount is zero. Consecutive percentage changes multiply; they do not simply add.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a percentage change and percentage points?

Going from 10% to 15% is a rise of 5 percentage points, but a 50% increase in relative terms (5 ÷ 10). Use the percentage-change card for relative changes.

How do I find the original number before a percentage increase?

Divide the final number by (1 + percentage ÷ 100). For example, 230 after a 15% increase was 230 ÷ 1.15 = 200 before. The “Reverse percentage” card does this for you, for increases and decreases.

How do I calculate X% of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100: 33% of 121 is 121 × 33 ÷ 100 = 39.93. Fill in the first sentence and the answer appears instantly.
